Chamber choir Exultate Singers perform a programme of choral masterpieces from across the British Isles, including Thomas Tallis's 'Spem in Alium'.
Exultate Singers are back at St George's Bristol on Saturday 17 October, with a programme they've titled A Sense of the Divine: Isles of Song. It's part of the 'Just Announced' series at the hall, and the whole thing is conducted by David Ogden, with harpist Eira Lynn Jones joining them on stage.
The evening is built around a musical tour of the five countries of the British Isles, pairing grand choral masterpieces with lyrical contemporary works and arrangements of traditional songs. There's music from the Isle of Man and the Isles of Scilly in the mix, so it reaches a bit further than the usual mainland repertoire. The centrepiece is Thomas Tallis's Spem in Alium, an extraordinary 40-part motet that the choir will sing from around the balconies of the hall, wrapping the sound all the way around the audience. Other highlights include Paul Mealor's Ubi caritas, written for the marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2011, and Ben Parry's vibrant setting of the Irish tune Star of the County Down.
Exultate Singers is a Bristol chamber choir of 45 singers, founded in September 2002 by David Ogden. They've given more than 250 concerts and have been broadcast on BBC Radios 2, 3, 4 and the World Service, as well as on Classic FM, BBC's Songs of Praise and The One Show.
