Live gig with funk, hip hop, soul and swing from the nine-piece Bristol band Cut Capers, plus supporting acts Jamu and Gareth Davie.
Cut Capers play Electric Bristol on Friday 30 October, their hometown show on a UK tour following the release of their new album, Balance, which came out on 9 October. They're a nine-piece Bristol band, and the night is a local one through and through: the artwork for the album was done by Bristol artist Maya Dudok, and they've brought along Jamu and Gareth Davie to open for them.
If you've seen them before, you know the live show is where they really lean into the energy. They're a big band on stage, and they move like it — the musicians jumping around and front man Tom Taylor climbing onto Nick van Tinteren's shoulders. A good chunk of that sound comes from a heavy four-piece brass section, which they wrap around funk, jazz and hip-hop. They've built a cult following on the British festival circuit and have supported the Brand New Heavies at the Royal Albert Hall and Craig Charles.
Their influences are a wide spread. They cite Tom Misch and Nubiyan Twist alongside Tears for Fears, Youngblood Brass Band and the Budos Band, and they've been compared to Lianne La Havas, Hot 8 Brass Band and The Streets. Being born and bred in Bristol, they grew up alongside the city's diverse music scene and make a point of supporting local acts, which fits the bill here with the local support and the hometown date.
