Screening of the Sudanese film 'Cotton Queen' by Suzannah Mirghani as part of the Film Africa festival at Watershed.
Cotton Queen is screening at Watershed on Sunday 22 November, as part of the 13th edition of Film Africa. It's a 2025 film by Suzannah Mirghani, set in a cotton-farming village in Sudan.
Film Africa is the annual UK-based festival organised by the Royal African Society to celebrate African cinema. This year's edition runs under the theme '125 Years of Storytelling and Movie Making in Africa', marking the Society's 125th anniversary. The festival has a particular focus on women this time around, with the symposium 'TWENDE: African Women and Cinema' held at BFI Southbank. It opened with Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo's Ben'Imana (2026), which won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes and made Dusabejambo the first Rwandan director to premiere in the festival's official selection. The edition also pays tribute to Tunisian filmmaker Ferid Boughedir, known for Caméra d'Afrique (1983) and Caméra Arabe (1987).
