The City of Bristol Choir performs Vivaldi's Dixit Dominus (Bristol premiere) with the Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra, alongside works by Handel.
City of Bristol Choir are performing Choral Fireworks at St George's Bristol on Saturday 7 November, with the Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra joining them. The night is built around the Bristol premiere of Antonio Vivaldi's Dixit Dominus, a choral work that only came to light in 2005. It's written with virtuosic duets for two tenors and two sopranos, and the tenor parts are taken by brothers Gwilym and Ruairi Bowen.
That's the main event, but it's not the only thing on the bill. The evening also brings together two of George Frideric Handel's most joyful and triumphant works, both written to celebrate the end of war and the signing of peace treaties. With the concert falling on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, the pairing of the two composers makes a bit of sense. More than 100 voices gather for the occasion, so it's a full choir on stage rather than a small ensemble.
David Ogden conducts the whole thing, and the soloists alongside the Bowen brothers are soprano Hilary Cronin and mezzo soprano Frances Gregory. The Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra provides the orchestral backing for the choir, so you'll have the full sound of the orchestra and the choir working together throughout. If you're arriving early, there's pre-event food and drink you can pre-order from the Café Bar.
