Screening of the extended American cut of Hammer's 'Cash on Demand' (1961), Peter Cushing's heist thriller adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol', with an introduction from Film Noir UK.
Watershed is screening the extended American cut of Cash on Demand (1961) on Tuesday 15 December, with an introduction from Film Noir UK. It's a Hammer production, and the one you'll see is the longer US version rather than the shorter UK cut.
If you're not familiar with it, Cash on Demand is Hammer's take on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, reimagined as a tense heist thriller. Peter Cushing stars as the miserly bank manager Harry Fordyce, who is visited by the bank's insurance detective Hepburn, played by AndrΓ© Morell β a man harbouring nefarious plans of his own. It's a far cry from the ghost story you're probably thinking of, with the Dickensian setup serving as the starting point for a crime drama.

The casting brings together Cushing and Morell, who had just played Holmes and Watson for Hammer in The Hound of the Baskervilles and had co-starred in the BBC's controversial 1954 adaptation of George Orwell's 1984. It's one of those films that has grown in reputation over the years, and many now regard it as one of Hammer's best. The screening is presented in collaboration with BFI Film Audience Network and Film Noir UK, the spin-off of South West Silents, a group founded in 2015 to share its founders' passion for silent film and to celebrate cinema history through live-music performance events across the South West and the UK. The introduction from Film Noir UK comes before the film starts, so it's worth arriving a bit early to catch it. The screening is at Watershed in Bristol on Tuesday 15 December.
