Bristol Grammar School young musicians perform works by Hans Zimmer, Puccini, Haydn and Dvořák, followed by Brian Wilson classics paired with early sacred harmonies.
Bristol Grammar School are taking over the Main Hall at St George's Bristol on Tuesday 10 November, with the concert starting at 7.15pm. It's titled Standing on the Shoulders of Giants and it's part of the venue's 'Just Announced' series, built around the musical threads that connect the past and the present. The programme pulls from the polyphony of Tallis, Palestrina and Hildegard von Bingen alongside the creativity of Brian Wilson, Hans Zimmer, Olivia Rodrigo and Bat For Lashes.
The first half belongs to the school's own young musicians, who'll be performing orchestral, choral and chamber pieces by Hans Zimmer, Puccini, Haydn and Dvořák. After the interval, the focus shifts to Brian Wilson, with classics like 'God Only Knows', 'Surf's Up', 'California Girls' and 'Good Vibrations' paired with the early sacred harmonies of Allegri, Tallis and Palestrina. It's a bit of a leap from the Beach Boys to the Renaissance, but that's the whole point of the night.
