A concert featuring the Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra with violinist Cristian de Sá and soprano Layla Claire, performing Mahler's Symphony No 4, Delius Violin Concerto and Humperdinck's Overture to Hansel and Gretel.
Brandon Hill Chamber Orchestra are back at St George's Bristol on Saturday 14 November, with a programme that runs from a fairy-tale overture through a violin concerto and into one of Mahler's most intimate symphonies. It's a big night for the orchestra, too: conductor Meesun Hong Coleman is making her debut with them.
The evening opens with the Overture to Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck, a piece that sets a light, narrative tone before the mood shifts. From there, the focus moves to the violin with Delius's Violin Concerto, written during a particularly focused and productive period for the composer. The soloist is Cristian de Sá, a violinist who's been picking up some serious momentum lately: Crescendo Magazine described his playing as a 'delicate alchemy... irresistible energy... radiance', Classic FM named him a 'Young Classical Star', and the Gulbenkian Orchestra called him 'one of the great violin stars of the future'.
The second half is Mahler's Symphony No 4, one of his most transparent and intimate works, and it brings soprano Layla Claire into the mix. She's celebrated internationally for what the Chicago Classical Review calls her 'rich, luminous instrument'. The symphony closes with a childlike vision of heaven, so the whole thing lands on a rather gentle note.
