A classical music concert featuring the duo Braimah Kanneh-Mason on violin and Jâms Coleman on piano, performing a programme curated around the theme of time.
Braimah Kanneh-Mason and Jâms Coleman are back at St George's Bristol on Wednesday 4 November, playing a programme they've curated around the sense of time. It's called Time Held, Time Passing, and the whole thing is built on pieces where time seems to behave differently — pressing forward, loosening its grip, or stopping altogether. Kanneh-Mason is on violin and Coleman on piano, and they've put together a set that runs across a few different eras.
They start with Schumann's Three Romances Op 22, then move into Beethoven's Violin Sonata in G major Op 30 No 3. From there, they shift into the stillness of Arvo Pärt, with Spiegel im Spiegel and Fratres — two of his most well-known pieces, and both of them very much in line with that idea of time slowing down. The second half brings back Schumann with Violin Sonata No 1 in A minor Op 105, and it closes with Debussy's Violin Sonata in G minor. It's a long programme, running about 110 minutes, so it's a full evening rather than a quick stop.
They've been playing together for a number of years, and their collaboration is described as informed by an intuitive and emotionally powerful musicianship that's deepened over that time. A critic for The Arts Desk called Kanneh-Mason's playing 'never less than superb' and noted its humility. The two of them curated the set themselves, so the order and the pairing of these pieces are their own doing.
