An adventure-filled animated adaptation of The Borrowers, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, screened in original Japanese with subtitles and English dub.
Arrietty is showing at Watershed on Friday 16 October. It's an animated adaptation of The Borrowers, one of the most beloved children's books of all time, and it comes from the creators of Spirited Away and Ponyo. If those names ring a bell, you've got a good idea of the pedigree here: it's Studio Ghibli, and it's directed by Academy Award nominee Hiromasa Yonebayashi.
The story is a familiar one if you know the books. Tiny people called Borrowers live out of sight of humans, tucked away beneath the floorboards of ordinary houses. They spend their lives scavenging what they can from the big world above, always careful to stay hidden. That changes when brave Arrietty is discovered by a human boy named Shawn, and the two form a friendship that blossoms into a heartwarming adventure. It's a gentle, imaginative premise that works as well on screen as it did on the page.
One thing worth knowing before you book is that there are two versions to choose from. You can see it in the original Japanese with subtitles, or in the English dubbed version, which features a pretty heavy-hitting cast: Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, Mark Strong and Olivia Colman. Whether you prefer the original voices or the dubbed ones is entirely up to you, so it's worth checking which screening you're booking if that's a priority. It's a family-friendly one, and the Ghibli touch means it should hold up for adults just as well as it does for kids.
