Film screening of 'Once Upon a Time' followed by a Q&A with director Mike Dibb, part of the 'John Berger at 100' programme.
Watershed is screening Once Upon a Time on Sunday 1 November, followed by a Q&A with the director, Mike Dibb. It's part of John Berger at 100, a programme celebrating the life and work of the writer and painter on his centenary.
Once Upon a Time is a visual essay filmed entirely in and around Berger's house in the Haute Savoie, in the French Alps. It's a meditation on our experience of time, told through a selection of contrasting, time-centred stories—some old, some new—all read by Berger himself. The film was edited using only images found inside the house and in the surrounding countryside and nearest town, so everything you see comes from that one corner of the world. It originally comes from the series About Time, which ran from 1983 to 1985 on Channel 4 and 3rd Eye.

The screening starts at 14:00, and the Q&A with Mike Dibb follows on. If you've never come across Berger's work, he was a writer and painter whose writing often looked at how we see things, and this film sits right in that territory: a voice-over reading stories about time, paired with images of the house and landscape he lived in. It's a quiet, focused piece of work, and having the director there afterwards to talk through it makes it more than just a screening. It's at Watershed in Bristol on 1 November, starting at 14:00.
