An aural indulgent evening featuring the post-punk trio Zelt, the Egyptian psych-funk project Tashkezar, and the folk duo Mazaika.
Zelt and Tashkezar play Komedia Studio on Saturday 14 November, with Mazaika joining them on the bill. It's a night that pulls together three acts with very different roots, and the organisers have billed it as the first time they've hosted Zelt and Tashkezar, and a reunion with Mazaika.
Zelt is a London-based Anglo-Turkish trio they describe as a SWANA-inspired post-punk and electronic hybrid. Their sound draws from a wide spread: acid house and surf, and the new-wave electronics of Holy F*ck and Factory Floor. Tashkezar brings Egyptian psych-funk made in London and Brighton, blending 80s and 90s Egyptian pop with Balkan folk and Turkish 70s psych. Both lean into electronic and dance influences, though they arrive from different ends of the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Mazaika is the duo of Igor Outkine on vocals, accordion and midi-accordion, and violinist Sarah Harrison. They fuse Russian folk and Gypsy music with classical, opera, tango, gypsy jazz, klezmer and French chanson, and have spent two decades playing everywhere from Cadogan Hall and Glastonbury to The Green Note. Between the three acts, the night covers a lot of ground — post-punk, psych-funk and Russian folk, all with a strong thread of folk and electronic crossover running through them.
