A free philosophy workshop exploring the concept of authenticity, run by the Philosophy Department at the University of Sussex as part of the Sussex Philosophy Society series.
Why Be Authentic? is a free philosophy workshop taking place at Brighton Unitarian Church on Friday 9 October, from 17:30 to 19:00. It's run by the Philosophy Department at the University of Sussex as part of the Sussex Philosophy Society series, and the whole thing is funded by The Royal Institute of Philosophy.
The workshop takes a single idea — authenticity — and pulls it apart. It's a concept we use all the time in conversation, but when philosophers talk about it, they often frame it as 'becoming what one is'. The session asks what that actually means in practice, and why it should matter to any of us. It's not a lecture you just sit through; it's a workshop, so the point is to get stuck into the question rather than just listening to someone talk about it.
There are four academics leading the discussion, three from the University of Sussex and one from Poland. Tanja Staehler is a Professor of European Philosophy at Sussex, and Mahon O'Brien is a Professor of Philosophy there too. Joining them are Robyn Waller, an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Sussex, and Philip Hojme, an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw. Having four different voices in the room should keep the conversation moving, especially when you're digging into an idea as slippery as authenticity.
