Ten-week course teaching jewellery design through wax carving and casting techniques, suitable for all levels, starting in September.
If you've ever walked through North Laine and wondered about the craft happening behind the scenes, the North Laine Jewellery School is offering something interesting this autumn. Located right in the heart of the area, specifically at 37 Gloucester Road, the school operates out of the well-equipped workshop of Julian Stephens. They are bringing back their popular Wax carving and casting course, which kicks off on Tuesday, September 1st, 2026. This isn’t just a quick workshop; it’s structured as a ten-week term, aligning with the typical academic year structure (Autumn, Winter, Summer).

The focus of the course is teaching jewellery design through the hands-on techniques of wax carving and casting. You’ll be guided by instructor Barnaby, learning manual skills and how to use the workshop tools to create everything from simple rings to more complex designs, even including pieces suitable for gem setting. The best part is that this course is genuinely open to all levels, whether you are a complete beginner just starting out or already consider yourself a seasoned maker. The school keeps class sizes intentionally small—a maximum of six students in general classes (and four in advanced ones)—to ensure everyone gets plenty of dedicated time and support from the experienced tutors.
For those interested in joining the September term, the school has confirmed availability for the wax carving and casting course on Saturday mornings and Sundays. While the school also runs general jewellery classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, and a specific wax carving evening class on Wednesdays (6-9 pm), the September course seems geared toward that weekend format. If you decide to take the plunge, you will walk away with a finished piece of jewellery or silversmithing that you created yourself. Since spaces are limited due to the small class sizes, booking is necessary to secure a spot, confirming this is a paid course offering.
