Intimate live show by Essex singer-songwriter Tom McRae with his touring musicians 'The Standing Band' at The Hope & Ruin.
Tom McRae plays The Hope & Ruin on Sunday 25 November, with his touring musicians, The Standing Band. It's a contemporary folk set from the Essex singer-songwriter, who's spent the last couple of decades building a name as one of the more respected writers of his generation.
McRae's career started with his eponymous debut in 2000, which earned him a Mercury Prize nomination alongside a Q Magazine Award and a Brit. He later set up his own label, Buzztree Studios, in Cornwall. Over the last 15 years he's put out seven critically acclaimed studio albums, and his following has grown around introspective lyrics and haunting melodies that blend folk, rock and alternative, with love, loss and human vulnerability running through the songs. He's released his latest record, Did I Sleep and Miss The Boarder, this autumn.
On stage he's not alone — he'll be joined by The Standing Band, the touring musicians who've been playing with him. He describes his live shows as intimate and deeply moving, with stripped-back arrangements that keep his voice and storytelling at the centre. It's that folk-leaning side of his writing that takes the lead here, rather than the fuller rock arrangements of his studio work.
