Reece Shearsmith brings Things I Took from the Dark to the Theatre Royal on Monday 5 October, a live show that takes its title and its material from his illustrated memoir, Things I Took from the Dark: The Museum of Me. If you know his work, you'll recognise the territory: the morbid, the macabre, and the slightly off-kilter. He's the co-creator of The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville, and Inside No. 9, and this is a night that draws on the same dark streak.
The show is built around his personal collection of 'terrible things'. He'll be guiding the audience through the bizarre artefacts and obsessions that have shaped his work, moving between storytelling and performance. The list of what he's gathered reads like a curator's fever dream: the screaming skull of Glamis Castle, the Highgate vampire, sea devils, witch hunters, and a talking mongoose called Gef. It's a look at the kind of things that occupy his head, the strange corners of history and folklore that end up finding their way into his writing.
It's not just a monologue, either. After the storytelling and performance, he sits down for a conversation with a special guest host, and the audience gets to put questions directly to the curator himself. So you'll hear him talk through these obsessions first, and then you'll have a chance to ask your own questions about them.
