The Zangwills

The Zangwills play Komedia on Friday 20 November, their first Brighton date since they formed in the North West back in 2017. They're a four-piece: Jake Vickers, Ed Dowling and Sam Davies met at sixth form college in Northwich, Cheshire, and the line-up came together when Jake's former school friend Adam Spence joined on drums.

Their sound comes from a few different places pulling in opposite directions. Jake and Sam are indie and classic rockers, Ed loves classic rock but is also into funk, and Adam leans towards the heavier stuff. It's a bit of a mix, and they've built a reputation for high-energy live sets that have steadily pushed up the capacity of the venues they play. They've put out two EPs and are currently working on their debut album, and they name David Bowie, The Cure and The Strokes as influences. Jake's distinctive vocals sit right at the front of the sound.

They've spent a fair bit of time on the road, supporting Yungblud, and an award-winning video for the band was produced by Maisie Williams. BBC Introducing called them "dead, dead, DEAD good," while Louder Than War, New Sound Generation and All Music Magazine have all pointed to their originality. If you're into indie-pop that doesn't sit too still, this is one to keep on the radar.

The gig is at Komedia Studio, 44-47 Gardner Street, Brighton BN1 1UN. Doors open at 19:00, with the show starting at 19:30. Tickets are £15.40, which includes the booking fee.
