The Witchcraft and Vagrancy Act are back at Komedia on Thursday 17 December with A Horror Folk Christmas, a celebration of festive folky frights and creepy Christmas carols. It's a return to the venue for the ghostly folk trio, and this time the focus is on the darker side of the season.
They describe the show as a blend of folk horror, dark cabaret and the gothic, unearthing the sinister side of traditional music with spooky sensibilities and a wicked sense of humour. Much of the material comes from the folk tradition itself; the trio points out that Christmas offers a surprising wealth of upsetting songs and distressing folklore, and they spend the night reveling in the horrors of our collective past. If you've always felt there was something a bit off about the old carols, this is the night they lean into it.
There are a few things to be aware of before you book. The show features flashing images and content some might find distressing, with references to murder, incest, infanticide and suicide. It's a horror folk Christmas, after all, and the trio doesn't shy away from the grim side of the folklore they're digging up.
