The Spook School, the queer indie-pop band from Edinburgh, play The Hope & Ruin in Brighton for their tenth anniversary of 'Dress Up'.
The Spook School play The Hope & Ruin on Wednesday 24 February, a show celebrating the tenth anniversary of their debut album Dress Up. The record came out on Fortuna POP!, and this is a full live show built around it.
They're a queer indie-pop band fronted by brothers Nye and Adam Todd, who formed in Edinburgh in 2010. Dress Up started ten years ago at Soup Recording Studio in London, where they played their semi-tuned instruments haphazardly and left behind the album that would become their debut. After closing their first chapter in 2019, the band reformed and now live in Glasgow, playing noise-pop jams that they describe as embracing life's misinterpretations and messiness.
Their music works through gender identity, queerness and self-acceptance, and they've become known for using indie-pop as a platform for trans visibility, inclusion and joy. Across three albums on labels including Fortuna POP!, Alcopop, Tugboat and Slumberland, they've toured widely; 'I Want to Kiss You' has over five million streams and Could it be Different earned a Scottish Album of the Year nomination in 2018. Pitchfork called them theatrical, and The Guardian described them as 'that rare and beautiful thing: a band with something to say'.
