Open mic night for professional comedians and emerging talent to work through fresh material at Artista.
The Secret Comedy Club runs its Tuesday nights at Artista throughout September, from Tuesday 1 September to Tuesday 29 September. It's a regular slot in a room that bills itself as Brighton & Hove's best small comedy club, and it's the only one in the city that programmes comedy every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The club describes itself as a safer and friendlier alternative to the larger venues, and the Tuesday night in particular is called the South Coast's premier new-material club.
That's the key to what happens here: it's a working room. Professional comedians turn up to work through fresh material, which means you're hearing jokes in their rawest form, before they've been polished for the bigger stages. Alongside them, up-and-coming acts use the night to get on their feet and aim to secure a spot at the club's weekend shows. It's a bit of a peek behind the curtain, watching the process of a set being built from the ground up rather than seeing the finished product.
The club also runs 'Gag Factory' nights, which they describe as built on a blend of excitement and unpredictability for established comics and emerging talent alike. Between the Tuesday new-material nights and the Gag Factory, there's a fair bit of variety coming out of the same room. Artista is described as the city's friendliest and most inclusive independent venue, and it's where the club's Audience Choice Award for Best Fringe Venue comes from.
