A 12-hour continuous charity swim relay from 7pm to 7am at Sea Lanes.
The Rockinghorse Relay is back at Sea Lanes on Thursday 24 September, a charity swimathon that takes over the pool for a full twelve hours. It's a relay, so the swimming doesn't stop: one person in the water at a time, handing over to the next, from 7pm on the 24th straight through to 7am on the 25th.
Because it's a relay, it's not about one person grinding out the distance. It's about teams of swimmers taking turns, keeping the clock running across the night. The swim starts in the evening, carries through the midnight hours, and finishes the following morning, so the pool stays active while most of the city is asleep. It's a charity event, so the whole thing is about raising money as much as it is about the swimming itself.
If you're not swimming, it's still worth keeping an eye on. A twelve-hour relay is a long stretch, and the atmosphere changes as the night wears on—from the early evening start, through the quiet of the early hours, and into the morning finish. It's the kind of thing that's easy to follow in stages, whether you're there for the start, the middle or the home stretch.
