A bold, immersive pre-Pride celebration featuring dance, drag, and community activities, transforming The Old Market into a space of queer creativity and activism.
201 Dance Company are taking over The Old Market on Friday 24 July for The Power of Love, a pre-Pride celebration that runs from 11:00 through to 22:30. It's a long day, and it's designed to be spent there rather than just popped into for an hour or two. The company has been a Brighton Pride partner for eight years, and this is their way of warming up for the main event.
The day starts in TOM's Bar with a free LGBTQ+ Creatives Market and Networking session, so you can drift in early, browse and chat. From there, the venue shifts into a night of live performance, drag, conversation and late-night club energy, with dance, drag, visuals and community all synced to the city's Pride history. 201 Dance Company will be joined by the DJ collective HIVE, who'll be handling the music as the day moves from the market into the club.
Across the whole thing, the company uses dance, activism and film to look at what Pride means across Brighton and within its LGBTQ+ community. It all builds towards a night of protest, joy, beauty and what they call "magnificently curated chaos." If you're not familiar with them, 201 Dance Company has picked up some strong reviews over the years: The Guardian called them a "stand-out dance of summer" and The Times hailed them as "the new generation of street dance."
