An irreverent and chaotic version of Marlowe's Doctor Faustus where a guest actor performs without rehearsal, facing mental games and pranks.
If you are looking for something a bit different during this year's Brighton Fringe, there is a production called The Faustus Project coming to the WundaBarn at the SpiegelGardens on May 25th. It is a take on Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, but with a specific twist that changes the dynamic of the performance entirely. The premise is that a guest actor, who has not rehearsed with the rest of the cast, steps into the lead role for the night. They are then subjected to games, mental challenges, and pranks by the other actors, Alex Medland, Courtney Bassett, Moira Hamilton, and Caden Scott, while trying to navigate the play.

The production is put together by Half Trick Theatre in association with Benjamin Alborough. Caden Scott is directing, with Benjamin Alborough producing and James Jennifer Wright handling design and operation. Because the lead actor is essentially improvising their way through the script under pressure, the show is framed as a high-stakes environment for the performer. It runs for 60 minutes, and given the nature of the setup, it is strictly for audiences aged 18 and over.
Regarding the logistics, the WundaBarn is a pop-up venue located in Victoria Gardens. Since the seating is unreserved, it is worth arriving a bit early to secure a spot. Tickets are priced at £14 for standard entry and £12 for concessions. It is worth noting that the production includes specific content warnings, including strong language, nudity, strobe lighting, loud noises, and references to self-harm or suicide, as well as audience interaction. If you are planning to attend, keep in mind that the venue does not permit entry to children under two years old.
