Semi-staged production of Purcell's The Fairy Queen, bringing Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to the stage, performed by the London Handel Players.
The London Handel Players are bringing Purcell's The Fairy Queen to St George's Church on Friday 9 October, a semi-staged production that puts Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream on the stage. The story follows the thwarted fairy king Oberon, who wreaks comic revenge on his queen, and it unfolds through a magical series of masques.
It's a production that mixes emerging talent with seasoned professionals, bringing together the London Handel Players and BREMF Emerging Artists with professional dancers. On the singing side, you'll find sopranos Ruby Skilbeck and Emma Warner, contralto Laura Toomey, tenor Hugo Williamson and baritone Allyn Wu, alongside mezzo-soprano Mercè Bruguera Abelló, tenor Benedict Munden and bass Fionn Ó hAlmhain. The movement is choreographed by Mary Collins, with Steven Player, Kath Waters, Anne Deller and Aya Robertson dancing on stage.
Adrian Butterfield is the Musical Director of both the London Handel Players and of this production, and the semi-staged format means the music takes centre stage while the story still gets its space. If you're familiar with A Midsummer Night's Dream, you'll recognise the ground it's working from, but this is Purcell's take on it, built around those masques that drive the narrative forward.
