The Brighton Slamologue

The Brighton Slamologue returns to The Yellow Book on Wednesday 29 July, and it's not just a one-off. It's part of a run that keeps going through the autumn, with dates on 26 August, 30 September, 28 October and 25 November.

If you've never been, here's the format: it's a monologue slam. Performers take to the stage and deliver a single monologue, two to three minutes long, each one drawn from an existing play. The whole thing is built around the choices they make. Rather than the big, overdone speeches everyone knows, the night is known for the quirky and offbeat cuts — the odd corners of plays that don't usually get their own spotlight. Because the pieces are so short, you get a good handful of them in one sitting, each a completely different voice and a different play.

And it's not just the performers who have a part to play. Every week, selected audience members vote to decide who wins the cash prizes and the slam itself, so you're not just watching the night unfold — you're helping pick the winner. If you're a fan of theatre but don't always have the time for a full production, it's a decent way to hear a lot of different writing in one go.

All the nights run from 19:30 to 21:00 at The Yellow Book, 3a York Place, BN1 4GU, and tickets are £7.00. The first one is Wednesday 29 July, with the rest following on 26 August, 30 September, 28 October and 25 November.
