Opera Kipling are bringing Rossini's The Barber of Seville to Kipling Gardens on Monday 31 August, starting at 17:00. It's a late summer afternoon slot, so you'll still have plenty of daylight left when the curtain goes up.
The Barber of Seville is one of the most famous comic operas ever written, and it's often called the 'opera buffa of all opera buffa' — the gold standard for Italian comic opera. If you've never seen it, it's a fast-paced, farcical comedy of errors and mistaken identities, and it's just as funny now as it was when Rossini first put it together. The performance will have English surtitles, so you can follow the plot in real time without having to know your Italian.
Opera Kipling is a young, professional company, and they've got a bit of a story behind the name: they're named after their dog, not the garden. The venue itself, Kipling Gardens, has its own history. It once formed part of the curtilage of The Elms, the house where Rudyard Kipling lived from 1897 to 1902, and it's known for its 'wild garden' which hosts picnics and croquet during the summer months. It's a nice spot to be on a bank holiday Monday afternoon, especially with the weather still on our side.
