STATUS FLO: Black History Month

AFLO. the poet brings her spoken word series, STATUS FLO, to Brighton Dome on Monday 5 October, this time as a Black History Month special. The night is hosted by AFLO. herself, an award-winning Brighton-based artist, activist and academic who uses poetry to tackle hard-hitting subjects like racism and mental health, drawing on her own lived experience. She was previously an in-house artist at the Dome, so this is a return to familiar ground.

STATUS FLO is a series of spoken word nights that pair award-winning poets with the city's freshest local voices and special guests from across the UK. AFLO. describes the format as 'cultural democracy in action', and reviewers have called the series 'powerful, emotive and urgent'. For this Black History Month edition, she's joined by Maureen Onwunali, a Dublin-born Nigerian poet and two-time national slam champion whose work has been featured by Apples and Snakes, BBC Radio London, the BFI, Hay Festival, The Poetry Society and the Irish Embassy.

The performance takes place in The Studio Theatre, inside Brighton Dome on Church Street (BN1 1UE). It's a chilled performance, recommended for ages 14 and over. Doors open at 7.15pm, and the show starts at 8pm.
