An 80s club night featuring Joy Division and New Order classics, with period smoke machines and themed drinks.
Spellbound is back at Komedia on Saturday 21 November, this time as a Joy Division and New Order special. It's one of Brighton's longest-running monthly alternative 80s nights, usually held on the third Saturday of the month, and it bills itself as an '80s club night for people who hate '80s nights.
Behind the decks are DJs Simon Price, a Cure biographer from Stay Beautiful, and Jayney BlamBlam of Total Blam Blam. They work their way through Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth and Ska classics from 1979-1989, served with period smoke machines, snakebite and black drinks and 80s-style visuals. This particular night puts Joy Division and New Order at the centre, so expect the set to lean heavily into that particular lineage.
It's a standing club night for ages 18+. The Joy Division/New Order special is part of a wider run of Spellbound dates: the Halloween Special on 31 October, which moves to the Komedia Basement and is described as the biggest in town, with cabaret from Laura Loops and retro horror video mash-ups on the screens; the Christmas Special on 19 December; and the New Year's Eve party on Thursday 31 December. The annual Spellbound Synth Special has also become one of the club's most popular nights.
