Spellbound

Spellbound is back at The Studio Bar of Komedia on Saturday 19 September, one of Brighton's longest-running monthly alternative 80s nights. It usually falls on the third Saturday of the month, so if you miss this one, there's another coming around in a few weeks. This particular night is run by DJs Simon Price (Stay Beautiful) and Jayney BlamBlam (Total Blam Blam), who keep the floor going with a mix of goth, post-punk, new romantic, new wave, indie rock, synth and ska classics from 1979-1989. The room is set up with period visuals, smoke machines and cheap Snakebite & Black.

It's billed as the 80s night for people who hate typical 80s nights. Instead of Madonna, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson or Wham, the focus is on the music that inspired the goth movement and the fusion of electronic dance and alternative rock. It runs as a friendly, inclusive safe space with zero tolerance for racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ableism and bigotry.

Beyond the regular monthly dates, there are a few special editions throughout the year. There's an all-electronic Synth Special, a Halloween party on 31 October, and a Joy Division/New Order night on 21 November marking fifty years since the Manchester legends first came together. The run wraps up with a New Year's Eve special on 31 December.
