An 80s club night with alternative classics, featuring DJs Simon Price and Jayney BlamBlam, with a Halloween theme.
Spellbound returns to Komedia on Saturday 31 October for its Halloween Special. It's one of Brighton's longest-running monthly alternative 80s nights, usually held on the third Saturday of every month, and this one moves from the usual Studio Bar into the Komedia Basement. The night is standing only and ages 18+.
Behind the decks are DJs Simon Price, a Cure biographer from Stay Beautiful, and Jayney BlamBlam of Total Blam Blam. They describe it as an '80s night for people who hate '80s nights, and the set reflects that. They dig through Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth, and Ska classics from 1979-1989, so it's more about the alternative side of the decade than the chart hits. The room is rounded out with period smoke machines, snakebite, and black drinks, and there's a following 80s-themed Facebook group.
This particular date is the Halloween Special, which the club describes as the biggest in town. It's one of a few themed nights they run throughout the year: the annual Spellbound Synth Special has become one of their most popular, and they've got a Joy Division/New Order Special on Saturday 21 November, a Christmas Special on Saturday 19 December, and a New Year's Eve party on Thursday 31 December.
