Soot Sprite play The Hope & Ruin on Friday 27 November, presented by Full Fat & Sugar-Free Records. They're a four-piece indie/shoegaze act from the south of England, and this is their Brighton date.
The band formed in Devon back in 2018, fronted by Elise Cook. Since then they've put out three EPs — one of them self-released — and their debut album, Wield Your Hope Like A Weapon, which came out in 2025 on Specialist Subject Records. That record did well with the critics: Clash Magazine gave it 8/10 and called it "a piece of art that perfectly captures something vital about what it means to hope for a better 2025", and KEXP described the sound as a mix of shoegaze, grunge and emo. They describe their own songs as equal parts bleak and bright, which fits that grunge-meets-shoegaze description well enough — the heavy, distorted walls of sound sitting alongside the more melodic, open moments.
They've toured the UK and Europe quite a bit, sharing stages with bands like Sweet Pill, SUDS, Chase Petra and Bears In Trees, so they're no strangers to the road. The Brighton show is presented by Full Fat & Sugar-Free Records, and it's a headline slot for them.
