Live music tribute to Paul Weller and The Jam at The Prince Albert in Brighton.
Simply Weller play The Prince Albert on Saturday 29 August, a tribute to Paul Weller's work across his different eras. It's a night that pulls from the whole run: the Mod-revival energy of The Jam, the sophisticated pop of The Style Council, and the solo career that's followed.
That's the thing about Weller — he's had a few distinct lives as a songwriter, and this set brings them together. The Jam were the sharp, punchy three-piece that defined a whole sound in the late seventies; The Style Council took a turn towards soul and jazz-pop in the eighties; and his solo work has since moved through folk, rock and beyond. A tribute that covers all three gets to touch on each of those chapters rather than sticking to just one.
The official Brighton listing describes the night as a mix of Paul Weller and "blockbusters" from The Jam, put together to evoke great music. If you've followed him from the early days, it's a chance to hear the songs you know from different periods in one go. If you're newer to his catalogue, it's a decent way to get a sense of where he started and where he went.
