A night of talks and Q&As focusing on rave culture, dance music, and photography, featuring photographers Yushy and Georgina Cook.
If you’re interested in the history and future of UK dance music subcultures, mark your calendar for Sunday, March 22, 2026. That evening, the East Street Tap in Brighton will host the latest installment of the 'Sound Affects' series, organized and presented by journalist Jak Hutchcraft. Dubbed Rave Special #3: Yushy & Georgina Cook, the event is structured as a night of talks and Q&As dedicated to exploring rave culture, dance music, and documentary photography—specifically focusing on how sound shapes our communities and experiences. The session runs from 6:00 PM until 9:30 PM, offering a deep dive into two distinct eras of underground UK nightlife.

The program features two highly respected photographers whose work captures the essence of these scenes. First up is Georgina Cook, known for her contributions to publications like The Guardian and VICE. She will be discussing her book, Drumz Of The South: The Dubstep Years (2004-2007). This work documents the foundational years of the London dubstep scene, covering pivotal nights and radio stations like FWD>> at Plastic People, DMZ, and Rinse FM, and featuring pioneers such as Burial, Skream, Benga, Mala & Coki, and Kode9. Her discussion offers a crucial look back at a genre that defined a generation of UK bass music.
Contrasting this historical perspective is the work of Yushy, who documents contemporary raves, protests, and subcultures. Yushy will present his new book, Section 63: Underground & Unmastered Documenting Underground London Raves. This collection captures the modern DIY spirit of the free party scene, focusing on the ongoing effort to reclaim forgotten spaces for music, proving that the underground spirit is very much alive today. Following the talks and Q&As with both artists, the night will transition into a DJ set, playing tunes into the evening.
The event takes place at 72 East Street, BN1 1HQ. Standard entry is set at ÂŁ10.00 (plus a small booking fee if purchased online). Jak Hutchcraft has also made an effort to ensure accessibility: if you want to attend but genuinely cannot afford the ÂŁ10 ticket, you are encouraged to contact him directly at jakhutchcraft@hotmail.co.uk.
