A hands-on course teaching how to prune a young fruit tree from planting until it is established.
Stanmer Park is hosting a pruning course for young fruit trees on Saturday 16 January 2027, running from 09:30 to 16:00. It's a hands-on day, which is the main thing to keep in mind here: you'll be out there with the tools in your hand rather than just watching someone else do the work.
The course focuses on the early years of a fruit tree's life. You'll learn how to prune from the moment it's planted right through until it's fully established, so it covers the whole process rather than just one season. If you've got a young tree in your garden and aren't entirely sure when to cut or where to make the first few snips, that's exactly what this is for. It's about getting the structure right from the start so the tree grows the way you want it to, rather than just letting it do its own thing and hoping for the best.
Being a full day, you'll have plenty of time to get stuck in. It runs from half-past nine in the morning through to four in the afternoon, so it's a proper session rather than a quick demo. You'll be working at Stanmer Park on Lewes Road, BN1 6JG, which is easy enough to get to from within the city.
