The Hope & Ruin is hosting a pre-Pride party on Friday 31 July, with all profits going to The Clare Project, a Brighton-based transgender social and support group. The night is built around a four-act bill: Not Richard & Her Majesty, Stuart McKenzie, Crysometimes, and Maiden Ray.
Not Richard & Her Majesty are a Brighton five-piece who describe their sound as 'death-glam-doop-wop', fronted by Rich Fownes. It's a mix of 60s-inspired sunshine pop and chaotic, diaristic themes. Stuart McKenzie comes from London, where he works as an artist, poet, and musician, with a practice that looks at performance, identity, and mundane culture. His musical project, Goings On F.M.T. (Feminine, Marvelous & Tough), is an upbeat, dance-floor-ready track that blends pop sensibilities with subversive lyrics. Crysometimes and Maiden Ray round out the lineup.
The venue is a 150-capacity space above a busy pub, known for live shows from local and international artists, poetry nights, and the occasional late-night club event. You're welcome to spend time at the ground floor bar before heading up, which serves a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including the venue's own Hope & Ruin Mosaic Pale Ale.
