Polyphony Crawl

BREMF Consort of Voices are taking Renaissance polyphony out of the concert hall and into the city's churches on Saturday 19 September, with four separate performances spread across Brighton and Hove. It's called the Polyphony Crawl, and the format is as open as it sounds: you can turn up for a single stop or follow the ensemble across the city all day.

Each performance runs for about twenty minutes, and the music is Renaissance polyphony — vocal music from the 15th and 16th centuries, where multiple independent melodic lines weave together. The Consort is directed by James Elias, and the whole thing is free, so there's no ticket to book and nothing to pay when you get there.

The crawl starts in the city centre at St Paul's Church on West Street at 11:00. From there it moves to St Luke's Church in Queen's Park at 12:30, then out to Holy Cross Church in Woodingdean at 14:15, before finishing at St Margaret's Church in Rottingdean at 15:30. Because the stops are spaced out, you can pick the one that's easiest to get to, or make a day of it and follow the group from the centre out towards the coast.

Since it's free and no booking is needed, you just turn up. If you're only fancying one, the 11:00 at St Paul's is the most central; if you want to see the whole thing, you'll be following the ensemble from West Street through to Rottingdean over the course of the day.
