Live music gig featuring alt-emo band Pillow Fort and shoegaze quartet Looseleaf at The Hope & Ruin.
Pillow Fort and Looseleaf are playing The Hope & Ruin on Thursday 5 November, a double bill that brings two different takes on the UK emo scene to the same stage. The night kicks off at 19:30 and runs for about two and a half hours.
Pillow Fort are a three-piece alt-emo band from Nottingham. They describe their sound as a blend of modern emo, pop punk and math rock, so you'll get the melodic hooks of the former two alongside the shifting time signatures and jagged edges of the latter. It's a bit of a crossover: the pop punk side keeps things catchy, while the math rock keeps it from feeling too predictable. They're coming down from the Midlands for the night, so they're the visiting act on the bill.
Looseleaf are a South East emo/shoegaze quartet, which puts them a bit closer to home. Their sound leans into the shoegaze side of things — think walls of distorted guitar and a lot of atmosphere — and they're a four-piece, so there's a full rhythm section behind the noise. Between the two of them, they describe the night as bringing the raw energy of the UK DIY emoscene to the stage, and that's a fair summary: it's music that comes out of the smaller, independent scene rather than the big labels.
