Contemporary folk singer-songwriter Michael McGovern performs his album Thin White Road live at The Hope & Ruin.
Michael McGovern plays The Hope & Ruin on Thursday 12 November, bringing his album Thin White Road to the stage. He's a Glasgow-born singer-songwriter working in acoustic-driven folk, and the set is built around the new record.
It's a step on from where he started. His 2021 debut, Highfield Suite, was recorded in isolation during 2020 and produced by Bill Shanley. It picked up a fair bit of attention across the UK and Ireland, including BBC Album of the Week and a nod from folk legend Paul Brady. Thin White Road moves into full-band arrangements, and the lead single 'Evelyn' went viral in early 2025.
There's a literary thread running through the songs, too. He draws on writers like Laurie Lee, Hunter S. Thompson, and T.S. Eliot, and his live shows are known for their focus on storytelling and craft. The set will lean on the newer material from Thin White Road, but it's a full-band sound rather than the solo acoustic approach of the debut.
