Stand-up show by award-winning comedian and junior doctor Michael Akadiri, sparked by being called 'uncle' in public.
Michael Akadiri brings his show Don't Call Me Uncle! to Komedia on Saturday 6 March, 8:00 pm, with doors opening at 7:30 pm. It's a stand-up hour that follows two UK tours, and the title comes from a specific annoyance: being called 'uncle' in public. Akadiri says the term is usually reserved for elders, and he's only in his early thirties. He spends the hour fighting the allegation and thinking about the gap between how people see him and who he actually is, all while working in his trademark politically punchy anecdotes.
There's a fair bit of ground he covers, and that's because he wears a lot of hats. He's a multi-award-winning comedian, a doctor, a husband, and a father, and he's still working as a resident junior doctor. His stand-up draws on all of it, so the material comes from a few different parts of his life running at once.
He's picked up a few awards along the way, too. He won the Komedia New Comedy Award and the Comedian of Medicine Award at the Haags Comedy Festival, and he's been nominated for a Biggest Award in Comedy and for NextUp. You might recognise him from Comedy Central LIVE, ITV's Stand Up Sketch, and Channel 4's Stand Up to Cancer, or have heard him on Capital Xtra's Breakfast Show, LBC, and BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends. He's also toured supporting Jason Manford and Emmanuel Sonubi.
