Multi-instrumentalist duo Memorials perform a unique blend of melodic songwriting, psychedelic noise, and jazz using vintage recording techniques.
On Friday, 24 April, The Prince Albert on Trafalgar Street will host a performance by Memorials, the duo consisting of Verity Susman and Matthew Simms. Many in Brighton will recognise Verity as the frontwoman of Electrelane, while Matthew brings his experience from Wire, Better Corners, and UUUU. Together, they’ve developed a live show that relies on a fair amount of multi-tasking; they juggle various instruments to create a dense sound that usually requires a much larger group. Their approach is quite technical, often incorporating tape loops, drones, and analogue electronics alongside more traditional songwriting.

The music itself covers a lot of ground, moving from melodic tracks to sections of psychedelic noise and free jazz. They often use vintage recording techniques and motorik rhythms, which gives their sound a specific texture that sits somewhere between experimental folk and electronic music. This Brighton show also features Lello as the confirmed guest artist, making for a full evening of music in the venue’s upstairs room. It’s a setup that highlights their recent work, including the single 'In the Weeds', and shows how they manage the transition from studio experimentation to a live stage.
The evening is scheduled to begin at 20:00, and as is standard for shows at the Albert, it is an 18+ event. If you are looking at tickets, they are currently available for £15.00 in advance. If you prefer to decide on the day, the price at the door will be £19.00, though some listings suggest a general guide price of around £16.50. It’s a straightforward, ticketed event for those interested in seeing how two experienced musicians handle a complex, multi-instrumental setup in an intimate local setting. The focus is very much on the craft of the performance and the variety of sounds they can pull together as a duo.
