The Max Miller Appreciation Society holds its annual luncheon and cabaret at the Holiday Inn Brighton on Sunday 15 November, starting from 12:00. It's the centrepiece of the society's Convention Day, and it's a proper Brighton afternoon: a three-course Sunday roast, a cabaret, and a grand raffle, all in one go.
The cabaret this year is Never Forget Melodies, performed by singer Linda Watts, violinist Victoria Frances, and Carol Anne Wells. It's a music-hall style set, the kind of thing the society was built around.
For a bit of context, the society formed here around 2000 to celebrate Max Miller, the music-hall comedian known as 'Brighton's very own Cheeky Chappie'. Its first president was Roy Hudd OBE, a huge figure in British music hall, and since then it's grown into a small but devoted following. They run cabaret shows and a charity tea party at the Pavilion Gardens Café, where a statue of Miller stands. The current patron is ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, a 2013 Britain's Got Talent Wild Card Finalist, and president since 2020 is television producer and author John Fisher, a Gold Star member of the Magic Circle.
