Concert by Marey, an Icelandic experimental music duo, joined by Brighton-based improviser Matt Clarke at The Coach House.
Marey and Matt Clarke play The Coach House on Thursday 23 July. Marey is an Icelandic duo made up of sisters Anna Sóley and Lilja María, and they work in improvised experimental music that pulls together electronics, poetry, contemporary classical, sound art, spoken word and folk. Anna plays violin and sings, working with soundscapes and extended techniques, while Lilja plays a custom-built instrument they call 'Hulda'. Both sisters design their own electronics: Anna uses samples from Hulda, and Lilja works from a conceptual starting point inspired by poems and prose.
Joining them is Matt Clarke, a Brighton-based guitarist and improviser whose work sidesteps traditional notions of harmony and melody. He focuses on the random and unexpected within improvisation around twelve tones, exploring the sonic possibilities of unorthodox techniques. His other projects include Simian Carbuncle with Adrian Southby and MC3 with Charlotte Keeffe and James Edmunds, and he's collaborated with artists like Annie Kerr, Toma Sapir, Gus Garside and Mark Wastell.
