Map 71 isn't new to the scene; they are celebrating their 13th year and already have seven albums under their belt. Their sound is notoriously hard to pin down, often described as a mix of 'art pop - post punk - electro - psychedelia,' driven by Lisa Jayne's vocals and Andy Pyne's drumming and electronics. This new album, The Feral Jinx, recorded during the summer of 2025, represents a bit of a shift for them. While it includes studio recordings of recent live pieces, it also features two new compositions. The band is moving away from their earlier 'spoken-wave' style toward 'wordless vocals and structured soundscapes,' resulting in a sound that moves from darkly moody to euphoric. The material is described as less obviously confrontational than previous work, but still absolutely defiant and true to the Map 71 identity. The official release is in April, and copies will be available at the merch table during the show.
Beyond the main feature, the afternoon includes performances from J.Josephine and DJ Fiery Biscuits, adding to the experimental atmosphere. If you're planning to go, tickets are reasonably priced. The standard entry is £7.00, though if you book online via Ticketsource, expect to pay around £7.59 once the booking fee is included. Given the band's history and the specific nature of their evolving sound, this launch should appeal strongly to fans of alternative and experimental music looking for context on Brighton's unique cultural offerings.
