They are known for blending a lot of different sounds—you can find elements of heavy psych, post-punk, noise, avant-pop, and even some electronic minimalism in their work. While the overall vibe is often categorized broadly as Indie Rock, their history shows they are always pushing boundaries. The main reason for this visit is to showcase their sixth album, Datura. This record is interesting because it marks a deliberate shift in their approach. They recorded it themselves at their home studio in Ensenada, Baja California, but brought in some serious talent for the final touches: Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes) handled the mixing in Canada, and Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control) took care of the mastering in Australia.
The result is described as a 'short, sharp shock of a record,' moving away from the longer, more sprawling psychedelic jams of their earlier releases. Instead, Datura focuses heavily on 'bass-heavy post-punk grooves,' drawing inspiration from artists like The Congos, Ike Yard, Dälek, and Hiro Kone. This context gives you a good idea of what to expect: a tight, focused, and rhythmically intense performance that leans into their darker, more structured side.
For those planning to go, the gig is happening at The Hope & Ruin, located at 10–12 Queens Road. The doors are set to open at 7:30 pm (19:30). While the event might run until 11:00 pm, the 7:30 start time seems solid across the venue's own listings. Tickets are priced at £16.50. Just a heads-up, this is an 18+ event, so make sure you have your ID ready. It looks like a great opportunity to catch a band that’s actively evolving their sound and delivering a concise, powerful set right here in Brighton.
