Lara Ricote: Inkling

Lara Ricote brings her show Inkling to the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre on Saturday 17 October, as part of the Brighton Dome Comedy Festival 2026. Ricote is a Mexican-American stand-up who describes herself as a clown, and she's won the Edinburgh Best Newcomer award in 2022.

Inkling is the show she calls her "stupidest and smartest show yet", built around the question "How to Salute to the Mystery of Being Alive". It's a nuanced mashup of memoir, fiction and philosophy, and she draws on Sheila Heti's book How Should a Person Be? as one of its starting points. The style is physical and non-linear, weaving together dark humour about relationships and illness, and it even works in a Buddhist parable on anger.

Ricote's own background informs a lot of the work. Born in Florida to a Venezuelan father and a Mexican mother, she spent many years in the Netherlands before moving to the UK. She also incorporates her experience as a hard-of-hearing person into her comedy, and that sense of being an outsider—across borders and languages—runs through the material. The show is presented by IAM.

It's a 16+ performance, so keep that in mind if you're bringing anyone younger. Tickets are £21, and the show starts at 19:30 at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre.
