Concert featuring Joanna MacGregor conducting the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, with Nigel Kennedy performing Beethoven's Violin Concerto and his own arrangements of Jimi Hendrix.
Joanna MacGregor and the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra are back at the Brighton Dome on Monday 28 September. MacGregor is the orchestra's music director, and she'll be taking the lead on this one as both conductor and pianist, with the orchestra's principal players joining her.
It's a bit of a homecoming for the BPO, too. The Dome has long served as their home, and this concert comes as the orchestra moves into its 2026/27 season. MacGregor is right at the centre of that new run: she's set to take part in eight of the nine main concerts, alternating between the conductor's podium and the piano. If you've been following the BPO lately, this is one of the nights where you'll see her doing both.
Beyond the main stage, she's also running 'Listening Club' on the Thursdays before the Sunday concerts. Those are hour-long, illustrated, informal lectures designed to open up the music to the audience, so if you're coming along to the main events, there's a way to get a bit more context beforehand. The orchestra's wider programming for the season runs from the 20-year-old Ukrainian pianist Khrystyna Mykhailichenko to works by Harrison Birtwistle, John Adams, Jonny Greenwood and Arvo Pรคrt.
