A performance of the acclaimed play Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth, exploring myth and modern England at Brighton Open Air Theatre.
The Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Dyke Road Park is hosting a production of Jez Butterworth’s play, Jerusalem, this June. This staging is brought to the venue by the Tower Theatre company, marking their second visit to the site following their previous run with Moby Dick. The play, which first premiered at the Royal Court in 2009, is set in the fictional town of Flintock and follows the life of Johnny 'Rooster' Byron. Byron is a former daredevil and local figure who offers a sense of refuge to those on the run, while simultaneously navigating a conflict involving a planned demolition by the Kennet and Avon County Council. The narrative explores the contrast between the myths of England and the realities of modern life, presenting a look at the character's life on the fringes of society.

Because the script contains frequent strong language, references to drug use, and other adult themes, the production is restricted to those aged 16 and over. The performance lasts for two hours and forty-five minutes, which is a factor to consider when planning your visit to the park. While the theatre itself is a space that hosts a variety of family-friendly events throughout the summer, this specific production is intended for an adult audience due to its content. It is worth noting that the venue is an outdoor space, so the experience is tied to the environment of Dyke Road Park.
If you are planning to attend, the performances are scheduled from 17 to 20 June 2026. There are evening shows at 19:00 on Wednesday 17, Thursday 18, and Friday 19, with two performances on Saturday 20 at 14:00 and 19:00. The gates at the theatre open one hour before the start of each show, allowing time to settle in before the performance begins. Tickets are priced at £19.00 for adults, £17.50 for concessions, and £12.00 for those under 25. It is recommended to book these online through the theatre’s website to secure your place, as this is the primary method for managing attendance for the season.
