A 7-piece band performs a tribute to the jazz-influenced works of Joni Mitchell, focusing on her late 70s masterpieces.
If you have been looking for something a bit different to do this autumn, there is a concert coming up at the Brighton Dome that might catch your interest. On Saturday, 28 November 2026, a seven-piece band called Hejira will be performing a show dedicated to the music of Joni Mitchell. It is not just a standard tribute act; the group is made up of jazz musicians who have specifically come together to explore the more complex, experimental side of Mitchell’s catalogue.

The performance is set to start at 19:30, and the band focuses heavily on the material from the late 1970s. Specifically, they are drawing from the live album Shadows and Light, as well as studio records like The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, and Mingus. If you are familiar with those albums, you will likely recognise tracks such as "Amelia," "Woodstock," "A Case Of You," "Song For Sharon," and "Edith And The Kingpin." The band is led by Hattie Whitehead, who handles both the vocals and guitar, aiming to replicate the specific open tunings and vocal style that defined Mitchell’s sound during that era.
To give you an idea of the setup, the ensemble includes Pete Oxley on guitar, Ollie Weston on saxophones, Chris Eldred on piano and keyboards, Dave Jones on bass, Rick Finlay on drums, and Marc Cecil on percussion. It is a fairly technical lineup, which makes sense given the jazz-fusion leanings of the music they are covering. The venue, the Brighton Dome on Church Street, is a familiar spot for most of us, and tickets are currently priced at ÂŁ20.50. If you are planning to go, you can look into booking through the official venue channels or by calling 01273 709709 to secure your spot.
