Guana Batz

Guana Batz play The Prince Albert on Thursday 26 November, starting at 8:15 PM. They're an English psychobilly band formed in 1982, and they'll be the sole feature on the bill.

To get where they are, it helps to know the scene they came from. They were part of a British wave of psychobilly that emerged in the early 1980s alongside acts like the Cramps, the Stray Cats and the Polecats. Formed in Feltham, Middlesex, in 1983, the original line-up brought together vocalist Pip Hancox, guitarist Stuart Osbourne, bassist Mick White — who also played with the Meteors — and drummer Dave Turner. They played hopped-up rockabilly with the speed and aggression of punk rock, and they became fixtures of the scene that the Meteors, the Stingrays and the Caravans epitomised at London's Klub Foot.

A succession of records followed through the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the albums Held Down...At Last! (1985), Loan Sharks (1986) and Electra Glide in Blue (1990), before the band split in the 1990s. They reunited in late 1998 and recorded the all-covers album Undercover the following year. This Brighton date is part of that later chapter, with the band back on the road long after those first records.
