Grassroots returns to Patterns on Friday 4 September, part of a new regular free-entry night that's just getting started. The idea is simple: a night built around the local scene, with the aim of showcasing the depth of talent Brighton has to offer while exploring different dance music roots. It's a community-focused thing, and the free entry makes it easy to drop in without much thought.
Patterns is a good fit for it. It's widely known as one of the city's grassroots venues, and it's got a long history behind it. It opened in 2015 on the site of a former art deco hotel, and the spot has a deep musical heritage that goes back further than the current building — Ted Potters Music Bar and the infamous Escape Club both called this site home. Over the years, it's built a reputation as a safe space for Brighton's underground club culture and as a small live music venue that punches above its weight, even picking up a DJ Mag nomination for best club.
The room itself doesn't hide what it is. There's a hand-built DJ booth powered by a custom Ohm PA system, monolithic mirrors, industrial concrete, and vibrant green neon reflecting off Twin Peaks-style panelling. It's a space that leans into the club side of things, and it's where Grassroots will be digging through those dance music roots.
