GRASSROOTS is back at Patterns on Saturday 7 August, taking over the venue's terrace for another night of dance music. It's a regular fixture here, and the name fits what it's about: the night is built around showcasing local talent while digging into different dance music roots, so the focus stays on the city's own DJs rather than big-name imports.

Patterns, at 10 Marine Parade, opened in 2015 on the site of a former art deco hotel and has grown into a hub for Brighton's underground club culture, alongside its work as a small live music venue. The building carries a deep musical heritage, having previously housed Ted Potters Music Bar and the infamous Escape Club, and it's been nominated for best club at the DJ Mag awards. The promoters call it the most recognised grassroots venue in Brighton, which is a fitting home for a night that puts local talent at the centre.

Because it's a regular night, it's easy to drop into without much planning. Entry is free before midnight, and £5 after that, with last entry at 1 am. If you're coming early, you'll get in for nothing; if you're arriving later in the night, it's a fiver. The whole thing runs on the terrace, so you'll be out in the open rather than tucked away in one of the indoor rooms. It's a straightforward way to spend a Saturday night in the city, with the focus on local DJs and the roots of the dance music they're playing.
